In 2008-2010, while Riveredge was owned by prior operator Psychiatric Solutions Inc. — which UHS acquired in November 2010 — federal authorities scrutinized the facility in connection with patient-safety concerns, and news organizations reported allegations that minors were sexually assaulted at the facility and that reports of the assaults were not properly documented or reported to authorities.123

In December 2024, a lawsuit was filed in Cook County on behalf of a former child patient; attorneys said former minor patients, some as young as 8, had come forward with abuse allegations involving Hartgrove and other UHS Illinois facilities.45 UHS denies the allegations.
