In 2008-2010, while Riveredge was owned by prior operator Psychiatric Solutions Inc. — which UHS acquired in November 2010 — federal authorities scrutinized the facility in connection with patient-safety concerns, and news organizations reported allegations that minors were sexually assaulted at the facility and that those who reported were not adequately protected.¹²³

In December 2024, a lawsuit was filed in Cook County on behalf of a former child patient; attorneys said more than 100 former minor patients had come forward with abuse allegations involving Hartgrove and other UHS-operated Illinois facilities.⁴⁵ UHS denies the allegations.
