Who Can File a Claim?
Illinois law provides options for survivors of juvenile detention abuse to seek justice, even for abuse that occurred years ago.
- You were detained in an Illinois juvenile facility at any time
- You experienced sexual abuse by staff members, guards, counselors, or facility employees
- The abuse involved unwanted sexual touching or contact by staff
- You know or can identify the staff member who committed the abuse
- A family member who was detained and sexually abused by staff has since passed away
- You experienced retaliation for reporting staff sexual abuse
Illinois Statute of Limitations
Under Illinois law (735 ILCS 5/13-202.2), survivors of childhood sexual abuse whose claims were not already time-barred as of January 1, 2014 may now file at any time—there is no deadline. For abuse occurring in the 1990s and later, most survivors' claims remain viable today.
